Active Defense & Binding - Double Action
Reversible Candle | Red Over Black

☾

A Traditional Tool for Fierce Protection, Binding, and Cooling Fiery Conflicts

Magick Candles · Ritual Tapers · Double Action

Symbolic Intent

Unlike standard black-over-red candles that begin with clearing and end with vitality, the Red Over Black Double Action Candle reverses the energetic sequence for targeted banishing and boundary enforcement. Featuring a top-to-bottom color-blocked composition, this 9-inch x 1.25-inch taper begins by igniting fierce personal power or targeting an active, heated situation—such as an aggressive conflict or an unhealthy romantic attachment. As the flame burns down into the black base, it absorbs, binds, and grounds out that fiery energy, bringing the unwanted situation to a definitive end.

Understanding the Symbolism

✦The Red Top (Step 1): Associated with fire, passion, conflict, and assertive strength. Burned first, it either mobilizes your own fierce defensive authority to confront an obstacle head-on, or symbolically represents a heated situation, lingering anger, or toxic passion that needs to be addressed.
✦The Black Base (Step 2): Traditionally used for absorbing, binding, and banishing. As the candle burns down into the black wax, it captures the fiery energy raised in the first half, grounding it out, cooling down hostility or unwanted desire, and sealing the working.
✦Dual Traditional Uses: In folk magic and rootwork, a Red-over-Black progression is favored both for active defense (pushing back forcefully against interference before locking it out permanently) and for cooling and unbinding (taking a fiery argument or unhealthy romantic tie and extinguishing its hold).

FAQ How do I choose between Red Over Black and Black Over Red? +

In double-action candle work, the top color represents where your intention starts, and the bottom color represents the final outcome. Choose Black Over Red when you feel drained or crossed and want to clear away negativity first (Black) so you can reclaim your vitality and strength (Red). Choose this Red Over Black candle when dealing with an active conflict, aggressive interference, or an unhealthy passion—using the Red top to confront the fiery energy or mobilize your power, and the Black bottom to bind, cool, and shut the situation down for good.
