How to Set-Up and Use Your Ancestor Altar

Set your intentions, clear the environment, and establish a sacred anchor point to connect with your lineage.

1. Personalize your altar: Add photographs of loved ones, objects they cherished, offerings of food or water, flowers, or any items that connect you to your lineage. Your ancestor altar is a living space — let it grow with your practice. Place your Ancestor candle in the center as a focus point. You may put the bell to the left and the incense to the right, or whatever feels most comfortable.
2. Cleanse the space: Ring your pentacle altar bell three times over your altar space. Let the sound move through the area and clear any stagnant or residual energy. This signals to your ancestors that the space is being prepared for them.
3. Cast your protective boundary: Sprinkle your black ritual salt in a circle around your altar or sacred space, or place a pinch at each of the four corners of your room. Visualize a strong, impenetrable boundary rising up — protection that allows only benevolent energy to enter.
4. Place your devotional candle: Set the ancestral candle at the center of your altar as the focal point — the beacon your ancestors will follow. As you light it, speak aloud: "I light this flame as a beacon for my ancestors. I call only those who walk in light and love."
5. Light your incense: As the smoke rises, speak your intentions aloud. Name the ancestors you are calling. Tell them why you have come.
6. Close with intention: When your working is complete, ring the bell again to signal the close. Thank your ancestors. Extinguish the candle if needed, or allow it to continue burning as a sustained beacon. Ground and center your energy.
