• Trim the wick. Before lighting, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) to ensure a steady, controlled flame. A long wick can cause the flame to be too large and produce soot.

• Extinguish candles properly. Use a snuffer to extinguish the flame. Make sure the wick is fully extinguished and cool before handling the candle.

• Avoid handling a hot candle. Never move or touch a burning or recently extinguished candle until it has cooled down. The wax and the holder can be very hot and cause burns.

• Ensure good ventilation. Burning candles consume oxygen. Make sure there is some airflow in the room.

In case of a fire, have a fire extinguisher or a fire blanket readily available. If the fire is spreading, evacuate the area immediately and call emergency services.
