Vegvísir means "guidepost" in Icelandic, and is sometimes called a Viking Compass. It is thought to be a magical symbol for safety in travel or navigation. The Icelandic manuscript, Galdrabok, declares that "if this sign is carried, one will never lose one's way in storms or bad weather, even when the way is not known."
