A Samhain Banishing Spell

As the veil thins and the nights grow longer, we find ourselves on the cusp of Samhain. More than just "Halloween," Samhain (pronounced Sow-in) is a potent time of introspection, remembrance, and release. It marks the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year, inviting us to turn inward and connect with the mysteries of death, rebirth, and our ancestral roots.

For many, Samhain is a time to honor those who have passed beyond the veil. It's a poignant opportunity to reflect on our lineage, acknowledge the wisdom and strength that flows through us from our ancestors, and perhaps even commune with their spirits. This can be done through creating an ancestor altar, sharing stories, or simply holding them in our hearts.

But Samhain is also a powerful time for letting go. Just as nature sheds its leaves, we too can release what no longer serves us. The energy of this season supports banishing old patterns, negative influences, or anything that holds us back from our highest good. It’s a chance to clear the slate before the deep introspection of winter truly sets in.

Today, I want to share a simple banishing spell to help you release any unwanted energies or obstacles as we move into the darker months.

A Samhain Banishing Spell

This spell is designed to be performed with intention and focus. Feel free to adapt it to your own practice and what resonates most with you.

What you'll need:

A small piece of paper
A pen
A fire-safe bowl or cast iron cauldron
Matches or a lighter
A black candle for banishing
A sage smudge wand for cleansing

The Ritual:

Preparation & Grounding: Find a quiet space where you won't be disturbed. Take a few deep breaths, grounding yourself in the present moment. If you have a smudge stick, light it and gently cleanse your space and yourself, inviting in cleansing energy. Light your black candle, focusing on its flame as a symbol of banishing.
Identify What You Release: On your piece of paper, clearly write down what you wish to banish. Be specific. Is it a fear, a negative habit, a toxic thought pattern, an old resentment, or an external influence? Write it down with the intention of releasing its hold on you.
- Example: "I release the fear of failure." "I banish self-doubt." "I let go of procrastination."
Charge with Intention: Hold the paper in your hands. Close your eyes and visualize this energy, habit, or influence leaving you and being transferred to the paper. See it detaching, and feel the relief of its absence. Speak aloud your intention, something like: "On this day of Samhain, I release [what you wrote]. It no longer holds sway over me. I am free. So mote it be."
The Burning: Carefully and safely, light the paper from your candle's flame and place it into your fire-safe bowl. As it burns, visualize the unwanted energy transforming, dissolving, and becoming powerless. As it turns to smoke, watch it drift away and become neutral. Keep watching until it has turned completely to ash.
Affirmation & Closing: As the last of the paper burns, speak an affirmation of new beginnings. Something like: "A new space is created. I welcome peace, strength, and clarity into my life." Take a few deep breaths, grounding yourself in the present moment once again.
Disposal: Once the ashes are cool, take them outside and scatter them to the winds or bury them in the earth, symbolizing their complete release and transformation.

Samhain is a time of profound transformation. By acknowledging the shadows, releasing what no longer serves us, and honoring the cycle of life and death, we make space for new growth and deeper connection.
